The best-known version is the 15 puzzle: fifteen numbered tiles on a 4×4 board. The rules are simple; solving quickly takes a method.
Sliding Puzzle rules in 30 seconds
- 1Only tiles in the empty space's row or column can move.
- 2A tile slides into the empty space, never diagonally.
- 3Rebuild the original picture, or put the numbers in order.
- 4Fewer moves and less time is better.

The row-by-row method
- Solve the top row first, left to right. Place the last tile of a row by parking it below its spot and cycling it in.
- Then solve the next row down the same way, never disturbing finished rows.
- When two rows are left, solve them column by column from left to right.
- The final few tiles fall into place by rotating them around the empty space.
Why every board here is solvable
Randomly swapping tiles can create an arrangement that can never be solved. Exactly half of all arrangements are impossible. A proper sliding puzzle is shuffled by making real moves from the solved picture, which guarantees a way back.
Worked example: the last tile of a row
- 1The top row needs tiles 1 to 4, and 1 to 3 are in place.
- 2Putting 4 straight in would knock 3 out. Instead, move 3 one step right into 4's spot and park 4 directly below it.
- 3Slide 3 back left and 4 up in one rotation. The whole row is done.
Sliding Puzzle tips and strategies
Work in order
Top row, then the next, then the last two rows column by column.
Move the space, not the tile
Think about where the empty space needs to be to push your tile one step closer.
Don't break finished rows
Only use the unsolved part of the board to manoeuvre.
Learn the corner cycle
Parking a tile next to its target and rotating it in is the move that finishes every row.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Solving tiles out of order and undoing them later.
- Moving randomly and hoping. It rarely works on anything bigger than 3×3.
